Scholarships for PhD candidates
The Nordic Africa Institute, which encourages research and studies on Africa in the Nordic countries, invites applications for a couple of scholarships for a three months stay at the Institute to study at the Institute’s library. The scholarship covers travel expenses to and from Uppsala and accommodation. Included in the scholarship is a small cash contribution intended to cover the extra cost of living while in Uppsala.
Who can apply?
PhD candidates at universities and research centres in the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden) awarding doctoral degrees in social sciences and humanities, are eligible to apply, regardless of citizenship. The scholarship is also open to Nordic citizens pursuing PhD studies in other countries.
The PhD research should relate to current research at the Institute. The research at the Institute is organized into broad thematic clusters. The current clusters are Conflict, Displacement and Transformation; Urban Dynamics; Agrarian Change, Property and Resources; Globalization, Trade and Regional Integration; Gender, Sexuality and HIV/AIDS and Cultural Images and Expressions. The application should indicate which of the different research clusters the PhD candidate intends to link up with during the time as scholarship holder and in which ways the PhD research relates to the research cluster.
The aim of the scholarship
The aim of the scholarship is to offer PhD candidates links to the existing research at the Nordic Africa Institute and to provide access to resources at the institute, such as the NAI library with its large collection of literature on contemporary Africa (books, periodicals, newspapers, government publications).
The scholarship

In consultation with the staff at the Nordic Africa Institute, this period can be divided into two or three time periods within the duration of one year. The preferred time period/s of the scholarship should be indicated in the application. The scholarship covers travelling expenses for a return fare from study/work place to Uppsala and accommodation in a shared apartment. Moreover, the scholarship holder receives a small cash contribution to cover extra expenses while in Uppsala. At the Nordic Africa Institute, the scholarship holder will hold an office space in a shared office with access to printer and copying machine.
Application dates
The scholarship is awarded annually and the applications must be in by 1 October. No applications will be taken in 2009.
