The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGS) program is administered by Canada’s three research granting councils (the Canadian Institutes for Health Research, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council, and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council).
The Vanier CGS program aims to attract and retain world-class doctoral students by supporting students who demonstrate a high standard of scholarly achievement in graduate studies in the social sciences and humanities, natural sciences and engineering, and health; as well as leadership skills. Both Canadian and international students are eligible to be nominated for a Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship.
A Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship is valued at $50,000 per year, for up to three years.

The Canadian Commonwealth Scholarship Program is facilitated through student exchange agreements between Canadian and regional institutions. These student exchange agreements are created between universities for graduate students. Scholarship recipients remain registered as full time students in their home institution during this exchange.
This scholarship is hosted by Canadian institutions for a period of five or six months and provide up to $10,000 to cover transportation, living and other related expenses during the students’ stay in Canada.

Students at the University of Manitoba will receive more than $2 million in new research funding from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).
The Honourable Gary Goodyear, Minister of State (Science and Technology), announced yesterday $150 million in grants, scholarships and fellowships for top researchers across Canada – including $2.3 million for 136 students at the University of Manitoba.
“Our government recognizes that research and development creates a stronger, more innovative economy and a more prosperous Canada,” Minister Goodyear said. “The support announced today will accelerate the progress and nurture the talent of our most promising researchers at every stage of their careers, from undergraduate to graduate to professional.”
The funding includes three Postdoctoral Fellowships ($320,000), 10 Postgraduate Scholarships ($593,000), 37 Alexander Graham Bell Canada Graduate Scholarships ($1.3 million), and 86 Undergraduate Student Research Awards ($387,000). Recipients were selected through independent peer-reviewed evaluations.

Scholarships for PhD candidates
The Nordic Africa Institute, which encourages research and studies on Africa in the Nordic countries, invites applications for a couple of scholarships for a three months stay at the Institute to study at the Institute’s library. The scholarship covers travel expenses to and from Uppsala and accommodation. Included in the scholarship is a small cash contribution intended to cover the extra cost of living while in Uppsala.
Who can apply?
PhD candidates at universities and research centres in the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden) awarding doctoral degrees in social sciences and humanities, are eligible to apply, regardless of citizenship. The scholarship is also open to Nordic citizens pursuing PhD studies in other countries.
The PhD research should relate to current research at the Institute. The research at the Institute is organized into broad thematic clusters. The current clusters are Conflict, Displacement and Transformation; Urban Dynamics; Agrarian Change, Property and Resources; Globalization, Trade and Regional Integration; Gender, Sexuality and HIV/AIDS and Cultural Images and Expressions. The application should indicate which of the different research clusters the PhD candidate intends to link up with during the time as scholarship holder and in which ways the PhD research relates to the research cluster.
The aim of the scholarship
The aim of the scholarship is to offer PhD candidates links to the existing research at the Nordic Africa Institute and to provide access to resources at the institute, such as the NAI library with its large collection of literature on contemporary Africa (books, periodicals, newspapers, government publications).
The scholarship
The scholarship facilitates a three-month visit to the Nordic Africa Institute in Uppsala. In consultation with the staff at the Nordic Africa Institute, this period can be divided into two or three time periods within the duration of one year. The preferred time period/s of the scholarship should be indicated in the application. The scholarship covers travelling expenses for a return fare from study/work place to Uppsala and accommodation in a shared apartment. Moreover, the scholarship holder receives a small cash contribution to cover extra expenses while in Uppsala. At the Nordic Africa Institute, the scholarship holder will hold an office space in a shared office with access to printer and copying machine.
Application dates
The scholarship is awarded annually and the applications must be in by 1 October. No applications will be taken in 2009.

Scholarships:
Applicants accepted will be employed and enrolled at the IT University for a period of 3 or 4 years.
Appointment and salary will be in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC). For example, the basic salary of a 3 year PhD student amounts to DKK 24,594.08 per month.
Application deadline: October 7, 2009 at 12.00 noon (local time). The deadline is firm.
Applications and enclosures received at ITU after the application deadline will not be taken into
consideration.
